Not tourism

It's crazy to have to explain cruelty over and over again. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that some of these carriage horses look as if they're already dead. I was speaking with tourists on Saturday near the park, and the comment I kept hearing was: "The horses look so awful."

I suppose some people are bothered by the smell - a century ago the horses sprayed 3 million gallons of urine throughout the city per day - but they don't bother me. I imagine they'll be gone within a decade as developers consume their stables. But we who live here are exposed to NY's wonderful reminders of the past everyday, and tourists, of whom there were over 45 million last year, for the most part, like to see this.

Many more people make their livelihood selling counterfeit goods, so you need to pick the horses.

Most who speak of the tradition of the horse-drawn carriage know nothing of the real industry and its inherent cruelty. I encourage you to see the new documentary "Blinders," which pulls back the curtain and exposes the seamy underbelly of this industry. Visit "www.blindersthemovie.com" to see the trailer and learn more about local screenings.
